Indian Railways cuts prices of 'Rail Neer', other packaged drinking water bottles after GST reforms

Indian Railways on Sunday announced a cut in the maximum retail price of Rail Neer, from ₹15 to ₹14 for a one-litre bottle and from ₹10 to ₹9 for a half-litre, passing on the benefits of the historic GST reforms to passengers.Apart from Rail Neer, maximum retail price of IRCTC/Railways shortlisted packaged drinking water bottles of other brands sold in railway premises/trains shall also be revised from ₹15/- to ₹14/- per bottle of one litre and 10/- to ₹9/- per bottle of 500 ml capacity. These instructions shall be made applicable from September 22. Recently, the Indian Railways identified trucks, and air-conditioners among relevant items where the Goods and Services Tax rate rationalisation needs to be diligently ensured during procurement. Works contract provided by sub-contractors, and services of goods transport agencies will also be cheaper by the lowered rates effective next week. In a written directive, the Railway Board said necessary checks should be exercised at the time of processing supplier bills to avoid any errors in the payment.Granite, marble, and travertine blocks, sand lime bricks or stone inlay work, clinkers, electric accumulators, including separators, and electrical ignition are also among items of interest for the national transporter.Live EventsGST will now shift to a two-slab structure, 5% and 18%, abolishing the 12% and 28% rates, a rationalisation that’s expected to help lower prices and boost consumption. It is expected to make compliance simpler and improve ease of doing business, driving growth in a climate of global economic uncertainty. The boost to the economy from reforms is pegged at 20-30 basis points, offsetting the impact of 50% US tariffs. Net fiscal implication of these tax reductions is estimated at Rs 48,000 crore, but the finance ministry expects buoyancy as rate rationalisation and better compliance will balance impact.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
