Indian Railways is undergoing a major digital and technological shift with artificial intelligence AI taking centre stage in efforts to improve passenger safety streamline operations and enhance travel experience.
From AI-based inspection systems to crowd management and wildlife protection a host of innovations are now being rolled out across the country.
AI For Safer Tracks And Stations
This year Indian Railways signed an MoU with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India DFCCIL to deploy Machine Vision-Based Inspection Systems MVIS reported The Press Bureau of India.
Installed along tracks these systems capture high-resolution images of the undercarriages of moving trains to detect loose hanging or missing components. By reducing reliance on manual checks the system is expected to prevent accidents and service disruptions.
AI is also being integrated into crowd control with permanent holding zones being created at 60 high-traffic stations. Colour-coded sections arrows and separators will guide passengers while AI-powered surveillance will help authorities respond faster to surges in crowd movement.
In the Northeast an Intrusion Detection System IDS using distributed acoustic sensors alerts loco pilots about elephants or other animals straying onto tracks. Combined with honey bee buzzer devices at level crossings the measures aim to reduce wildlife collisions.

Smart Stations And Passenger Security
Plans are in place to equip 74000 passenger coaches and 15000 locomotives with AI-powered CCTV cameras capable of detecting unusual behaviour in real time.
At major junctions like New Delhi Howrah and Mumbai CSMT facial recognition systems are being installed to improve both passenger safety and ticketing efficiency.
Green Energy Innovations
Beyond safety Railways is also advancing on sustainability. At Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi a pilot project has installed removable solar panels between railway tracks. The panels generate clean energy without requiring extra land and can produce up to 3.5 lakh units of electricity per kilometre annually if scaled across yards nationwide.Engineers designed the panels with vibration-resistant mounts and easy removal options for track maintenance. The initiative supports Indian Railwaysrsquo commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
To further promote cashless transactions Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation IRCTC has also introduced point-of-sale machines in select trains enabling passengers to pay for meals via debit or credit cards.
