Chicago / US: Paramjit Singh, an Indian-origin businessman and US Green Card holder for over 30 years, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since July 30 at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Singh, who suffers from a brain tumour and heart issues, was returning from India when authorities stopped him.
The alleged offence
Officials cited a decades-old minor infraction—using a pay phone without paying—as the reason for his detention. Singh has maintained that he served his time and cleared dues long ago.
Health risks and custody concerns
After being held at the airport for five days, Singh’s health deteriorated, leading to an emergency hospital admission. His family, unaware until they received the medical bill, has expressed deep concern over his condition. Singh is a long-time resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he runs a business.
Legal battle and bond hearing
Singh’s attorney, Luis Angeles, confirmed that a bond hearing declared him eligible for release. However, the Department of Homeland Security has reportedly used legal methods to extend his detention. The case is now being prepared for federal court review.
Community and family pleas
Singh’s family has appealed for his immediate release, pointing out the humanitarian grounds linked to his deteriorating health. Community members have also rallied in support, questioning the rationale behind holding him for a long-settled offence.
The case has raised questions about the handling of old offences under US immigration rules, especially in cases where the detainee is a long-standing resident with severe health concerns.
