Indian govt approves pulses, oilseeds procurement at support prices in Gujarat and UP

The Indian government has approved the procurement of tur (pigeon pea), urad (black matpe), moong (green gram), groundnut, soybean and sesame at their respective minimum support prices (MSPs) from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. This will involve an estimated outlay of ₹13,890 crore, the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved the procurement of major pulses and oilseeds in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat for the kharif 2025-26 season, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Though the procurement at MSP has been approved for the 100 per cent of production has been allowed at MSP in case of urad and tur, the 25 per cent cap will be applicable on moong (green gram), sesame, soybean and groundnut. Per the procurement scheme PM-ASHA, Nafed and other nodal agencies are allowed to procure. Losses, if any, will be reimbursed by the Centre.

For Uttar Pradesh, the approval has been given for tur, urad, moong, groundnut and sesame, for Gujarat the Centre has approved moong, urad, groundnut and soybean. Chouhan directed both the States to ensure digital, transparent payments directly into farmers’ bank accounts.

Uttar Pradesh has estimated the State’s urad production to be 2.28 lakh tonnes (lt) and tur at 1.14 lt. If the government procures 100 per cent of the production of these crops, it will have to transfer ₹1,777.30 crore to urad farmers and ₹910.24 crore to tur farmers. Besides, procurement of moong has been estimated at 1,983 tonnes (worth ₹17.38 crore), 30,410 tonnes of sesame (worth ₹299.42 crore), and 99,438 tonnes of groundnut (worth ₹722.22 crore).

Similarly, Gujarat has estimated 47,780 tonnes of urad production and if 100 per cent procurement is made, farmers may receive ₹372.68 crore. The targetted purchase of soybean has been fixed at 1.10 lt (worth ₹585.57 crore), groundnut at 12.62 lt (worth ₹9,167.08 crore), and moong 4,415 tonnes (worth ₹38.71 crore).

Assures review

Chouhan assured the States that the approved quantity would be reviewed, if required, after the first advance estimates of kharif 2025-26 are released. He told the States to ensure only genuine farmers get the MSP benefit and middlemen must not take advantage. The Agriculture Ministry has directed Nafed and National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) to buy only from pre-registered farmers.
