In August, films grossed ₹1,136 crore at the domestic box office, which was lower than July’s gross collections of ₹1,483 crore.

“Based on pro rata estimation, the year has a good chance of grossing more than ₹12,000 crore, and is in the running to become the best-ever year at the Indian box office — a record currently held by 2023, at ₹12,226 crore,” the company said.

Nearly 70 per cent of the August’s collections were contributed by Coolie, War 2 and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.

“Coolie is the top film of the month, with gross box office of ₹325 crore across languages, and is now the third-highest grosser of 2025. The top films being Hindi films Chhaava and Saiyaara,” the report added.

Hindi and Malayalam releases dominated the list of the month’s top 10 flicks.

“The list also features two Gujarati releases, Vash Level 2 and Bachu Ni Benpani, with the former earning about 50 per cent of its box office from the Hindi dubbed version, aided by the success of Hindi remake (Shaitaan) of the first film in the series,” it stated.

In the January-August period, the top 10 films include six Hindi films including Chhavva, Saiyaara, War 2, Sitare Zameen Par, Housefull 5 and Raid 2. Coolie, multi-lingual animated feature Mahavatar Narsimha, Sankranthiki Vasthunam and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra are the other films ranked among the top 10 during this period.

In terms of language categories, Hindi continued to maintain 40 per cent during the January-August period, followed by Telugu at 18 per cent and Tamil at 16 per cent .

“The success of the Onam releases, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra and Hridayapoorvam, has boosted Malayalam language’s share from 8 per cent (January-July) to 10 per cent (January-August), bringing it back to the 2024 level, which was the best-ever year for Malayalam cinema,” the report noted.

Hollywood movies also contributed about 10 per cent to the Indian box office collections.
