Indian airlines to start resumption of flights to China by end of this month

Indian airlines will start resumption of flights to China by the end of this month while Chinese carriers are also preparing for resuming flights to Delhi.India’s largest carrier IndiGo said that it will begin daily non-stop flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou starting October 26, 2025, with a Delhi route to follow pending regulatory clearance. The carrier will operate double daily services connecting both Delhi and Kolkata to Guangzhou.Tata-owned Air India will also start flights between Delhi and Shanghai by this year and is awaiting approval, people aware of the development said.Chinese carriers like Air China China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shandong Airlines have also approached Delhi airport to resume flights, airport officials told ET.Under the current agreement, both the countries are allowed to have 42 flights per week. Chinese airlines with their aggressive growth plan have already utilised their full quota with three mainland Chinese airlines having services to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.Live EventsBefore flights were stopped between the two countries in 2020, Chinese carriers were utilising the full quota while Indian airlines could use only 30% of that.In the absence of direct flights between the world’s top two populous countries, passengers travelled through alternate hub airports such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and even Singapore, to reach their final destinations. According to travel analytics firm OAG, demand has continued to grow with 572,000 indirect passengers between the two countries.Airline officials said that the advancement of the range of narrow body aircraft will allow Indian carriers to launch more flights to Chinese cities.“ For IndiGo the Airbus A321XLR’s will provide a very efficient aircraft for such a market. With IndiGo flexing their muscles in longer haul international markets and a rebranded Air India looking to expand their network China presents numerous opportunities and China’s airlines may have a harder fight for dominance in the market,” an airline executive said.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
