India women cricket team will begin their campaign in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 with a clash against Sri Lanka in the opening game of the tournament in Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The tournament is being organized in a ‘hybrid’ model with Sri Lanka being the joint hosts as all of the Pakistan women cricket team’s matches will be taking place in Colombo.
Both the teams have never won the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title although the Indians got close back in 2017 when they ended up as runners-up to hosts England. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will be hoping to cross the final hurdle but it will not be an easy task with the likes of Australia England South Africa and New Zealand all major contenders for the title.
The Indians are coming into the World Cup with a historic 2-1 win over world champions Australia in an ODI series at home recently and almost hunted down a record 413 runs to win in the final ODI in New Delhi earlier this month.
“Chance toh kaafi zyada hai to be honest (We have genuine chance). Im not saying this because we are going to have the home advantage. The amount of cricket we have played and the results we have got in the recent past shows we have depth in our game whether its in batting or bowling. We have improved in a lot of areas” Harmanpreet Kaur said ahead of the opening match.
The skipper confirmed that the entire squad is fit which could pave the way for Amanjot Kaur to return to the side at the expense of all-rounders Sneh Rana or Radha Yadav. For Sri Lanka Hasini Perera is set to open the batting with their most experienced batter Chamari Athapaththu while Vishmi Gunaratne could be pushed down to the No. 4 position.
