Chabahar Port
India is examining the US decision to revoke the sanctions waiver granted in 2018 for operations at Iran’s Chabahar Port, which New Delhi has been managing under a pact with Tehran since last year. The waiver will lapse on September 29, 2025, as part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. ET has learnt that the Indian government is holding internal consultations on the development. The waiver, issued under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act (IFCA), had allowed India and other countries to continue work on the port without facing US penalties. Chabahar is strategically important for India as it provides access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.Plans are underway to link Chabahar with the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), and Central Asian states such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are exploring its use for access to the Indian Ocean Region. In a statement on September 16, the US State Department said the decision was “consistent with President Trump’s maximum pressure policy to isolate the Iranian regime.” It added: “Once the revocation is effective, persons who operate the Chabahar Port or engage in other activities described in IFCA may expose themselves to sanctions.”Live EventsThe State Department stressed that the move aligns with Washington’s wider push to disrupt “illicit financial networks that sustain the Iranian regime and its military activities.”However, it did not clarify which terminal at Chabahar would be affected. Analysts caution that the decision could undercut India’s connectivity plans with Afghanistan and Eurasia, while inadvertently strengthening China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).On May 13, 2024, India signed a 10-year contract to operate Chabahar – marking its first overseas port management deal. The long-term agreement was inked between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation. Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
