With the tournament expected to run from February 7 to March 8, the selection process focused on utilizing India’s largest and most iconic stadiums for the opening game, the knockout rounds, and the highly anticipated final, making the event a massive subcontinental cricketing spectacle. Securing its place in the knockout stage, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium has been designated to host one of the two semi-finals, promising a high-voltage clash at the historic ground. However, the final allocation of the semi-finals is subject to the unique geopolitical arrangement involving Pakistan and the co-host nation. The report further stated that the prevailing agreement between the BCCI and PCB dictates that if India and Pakistan face each other in a semi-final, that match will be moved to a neutral venue, specifically the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with the Wankhede hosting the other semi-final. Additionally, the second major contender for a semi-final slot is Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, which is also heavily in the running to host a semi-final if the Colombo-contingency is not triggered. The entire decision-making process for the final knockout slots has been designed to deliver high-quality cricket while managing the sensitive requirement of providing neutral grounds for certain international fixtures. Furthermore, the selection of the final venue is also highly conditional: if Pakistan reaches the final, the title clash will be shifted from the Narendra Modi Stadium to the neutral ground of Colombo as per the agreement stipulating that Pakistan will not play their matches in India. This clause stems from the prior agreement reached after India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, ensuring all matches involving the two nations in ICC or continental tournaments are played at neutral venues. Apart from the knockout locations, the tournament will be spread across five Indian cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, and three Sri Lankan venues: Colombo, Pallekele, and either Dambulla or Hambantota, with the BCCI ensuring that each Indian venue receives a minimum of six games for efficient resource management.
