India and the United States have agreed to keep working together to finalize a trade agreement that benefits both countries the government said on Friday. A delegation led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited the US from September 22 to 24. During the trip he met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor. The delegation also met with several key US companies and investors to discuss ways to increase trade and investment between India and the US.
According to the Commerce and Industry Ministry the meetings were constructive and both sides discussed possible details of the trade deal. It was decided to continue the discussions with the goal of reaching an agreement soon.
Business leaders expressed strong confidence in India’s growth and said they wanted to expand their activities in the country the statement added.
Goyal Pushes for Stronger India-US Energy and Trade Ties
In New York Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal took part in a high-level session on energy security where he called for expanding India-US energy trade. He highlighted opportunities for cooperation in nuclear power as an affordable clean energy source and encouraged support for renewable energy start-ups.
Goyal also stressed the need for global collaboration to ensure a secure and sustainable energy future. He pointed out India’s integrated national power grid which provides reliable electricity and reaffirmed PM Modi’s vision of ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ India’s leadership in solar energy the International Solar Alliance and the country’s renewable energy achievements.
Earlier Goyal met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to negotiate the first part of a trade agreement. Both sides discussed key issues and remain optimistic about reaching an interim understanding soon.
