India does not expect Foxconn’s iPhone production to face significant disruption after the company asked several Chinese employees to return home, a senior government official confirmed. “Although some of the Chinese workers had to leave because they were asked to return, operations did not really suffer significantly,” said S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, while speaking to reporters in Taipei during a trade show on Thursday. Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, has been operating a large facility near Chennai for the past five years and is currently building another plant near Bengaluru, Krishnan added. According to him, the company managed the workforce transition by deploying staff from Taiwan, the United States, and locally trained teams. Bloomberg reported in July that hundreds of engineers and technicians from mainland China were recalled by the company. However, Foxconn and its key client Apple remain committed to scaling up manufacturing in India. The move comes as Apple looks to reduce dependence on China and mitigate risks arising from US-China trade tensions, including the threat of triple-digit tariffs on Chinese goods. Foxconn’s expansion in India aligns with New Delhi’s broader “Make in India” initiative, aimed at strengthening the country’s position as a global electronics manufacturing hub. Industry analysts suggest that with continued investments, India could soon account for a quarter of Apple’s iPhone production. Despite the staff reshuffle, production timelines remain on track. “Foxconn’s India operations are stable and expanding,” Krishnan stressed, reflecting the government’s confidence in India’s ability to play a larger role in Apple’s global supply chain.
