India planning to track solar energy equipment imports with new monitoring system

India is planning to set up a dedicated import monitoring system to closely track the solar energy equipment coming to the country, according to a top government official. The ministry of new and renewable energy is in talks with the ministry of commerce and industry to firm up the system.Push for Domestic MfgThe proposed system for imports seeks to identify the content, source of origin, and adherence to harmonised system codes.“We have sent the proposal to the ministry of commerce so it should happen in the next few days,” MNRE secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi told ET.Many projects in India such as in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, and others that are auctioned require mandatory use of domestic solar cells and modules facilitated through an approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) which will further get momentum through a comprehensive list for solar cells effective June next year. ET BureauThe ministry has plans to extend the list of models and manufacturers further upstream to ingot-wafers, for which a draft has been issued, and later to polysilicon as well to get domestic manufacturing going.“Today, whatever is getting imported, there is no clear visibility on how much of it is for the commercial and industrial segment, for self-use, or for grandfathered projects,” Sarangi said.Live EventsThe system under discussion may require importers to provide advance information, submit applications online, and obtain an automatic registration number before customs clearance just like the system in place for the import of steel and paper.India’s module making capacity has crossed 100 GW led by duties and ALMM, while cells are at 27 GW, and both are expected to rise significantly by the end of the financial year, as projected by the ministry.India’s solar module and cell capacity are expected to touch 200 GW and 100 GW, respectively, by the end of FY28, outpacing the annual domestic module demand of 50 GW over the next three years, CareEdge Ratings said. However, outlook on export of modules remains uncertain as the US was the largest market for Indian companies, as per industry experts.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
