India is set to become the world’s largest Scotch whisky market — both in value and volume — within the next few years, driven by strong competition, rising premium consumption, and steady economic growth, according to Mark Kent CMG, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) as quoted by PTI report. Kent also praised the rapid growth of India’s single malt whisky segment, noting that the SWA is exploring partnerships with Indian producers — not only to introduce their products to the UK but also to tap into global markets together. Highlighting the recent international recognition earned by Indian single malts, Kent as quoted by PTI report said he plans to engage with the Indian Malt Whiskey Association to discuss shared goals around maintaining quality standards and promoting collaboration between the two industries. Calling it a “moment of opportunity” for both sides, he said Indian producers could strengthen exports of their single malts to the UK and beyond through strategic partnerships with Scottish distillers. India is already the largest market for Scotch by volume among 180 export destinations and ranks among the top five by value, Kent added. With rising premium demand and a more competitive environment for Scotch imports, he believes India is well on track to lead the world in both categories soon. While global economic conditions will play a role, Kent expressed confidence in India’s growing appreciation and knowledge of Scotch whisky. As per the latest Scotch Whisky Association data, India has reclaimed its position from France as the world’s top Scotch export market by volume — importing 192 million bottles in 2024 — while the United States remains the largest market by value, at 971 million British Pounds.
