New Delhi: India, led by external affairs minister S Jaishankar, made a strong case for the Global South and its priorities at the recently concluded UN General Assembly (UNGA) as well as during the meetings held on the sidelines of the assembly.At the UNGA, Jaishankar made a strong case for UN reforms and underlined India’s readiness to assume greater responsibilities in a reformed Security Council. He also had wide-ranging engagements in both multilateral (10) and bilateral (47) formats, including BRICS and IBSA on the sidelines of the UNGA.These meetings reinforced India’s focus on the Global South, while also attesting to its inclination to further consolidate existing partnerships with the Global North, according to a person familiar with the meetings.Expansion and diversification of India’s foreign policy were evident in his engagements. India convened a meeting of the Global South in New York. In addition, meetings with CELAC and SICA groupings of Latin America and FIPIC of Pacific Island countries testified to India’s outreach to different regions. The L69/C10 meeting on UNSC reform was the second of its kind.The annual G4 meeting was also held. As the incoming chair, India organised a meeting of BRICS FMs. In addition, there were G20 and IBSA meetings. Jaishankar also addressed a gathering of all EU foreign ministers for the first time in New York.Live EventsHe interacted with his counterparts from the US, Russia, UAE, Algeria, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Egypt, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the UK, among others.
