India’s 45-Day Wedding Season To Generate Rs 6.5 Lakh Crore; Here's How Much Delhi Expected To Contribute

India’s upcoming 45-day wedding season, beginning November 1, is set to spark an economic celebration of its own. According to a report by the CAIT Research and Trade Development Society (CRTDS), an estimated 46 lakh weddings will collectively generate an unprecedented Rs 6.5 lakh crore in business activity across the country, states an IANS report. The national capital is expected to play a major role in this economic surge. The study reveals that Delhi alone will contribute Rs 1.8 lakh crore, hosting approximately 4.8 lakh weddings. This data underscores the city’s dominance as India’s wedding hub, where expenditure continues to soar year after year, added the report. Rising Spending, Confident Consumers The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) noted that even though the number of weddings has remained nearly the same as last year, spending per event has noticeably increased. The report claims that CAIT Secretary General and Chandni Chowk MP, Praveen Khandelwal, explained, “The rise reflects higher disposable incomes, inflation in precious metals, and rising consumer confidence after a record-breaking festive season.” To put things in perspective, 48 lakh weddings in 2024 accounted for Rs 5.90 lakh crore, while 38 lakh weddings in 2023 were valued at Rs 4.74 lakh crore, showing a strong year-on-year upward trajectory. Swadeshi Weddings Fuel Local Industries The report also points to a significant shift toward Indian-made products. Over 70 per cent of wedding purchases, from jewellery and apparel to decor and catering, are now locally produced. CAIT’s “Vocal for Local Weddings” campaign has greatly reduced the use of imported items such as Chinese lighting, synthetic decor, and foreign gift accessories. Traditional craftsmen, jewellers, and textile manufacturers are experiencing a rush of orders, reinforcing India’s growing self-reliance and artisanal strength. “This season could generate over 1 crore temporary and part-time jobs,” said Khandelwal, highlighting benefits for decorators, caterers, florists, artists, transporters, and hospitality workers, the report added. Economic Impact Across Sectors Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in textiles, jewellery, handicrafts, packaging, and logistics are expected to enjoy robust seasonal growth. The report further projects that the wedding boom could add nearly Rs 75,000 crore to government tax revenues. Jewellery remains the biggest driver of wedding-related spending, contributing 15 per cent to total economic activity, followed by apparel and sarees at 10 per cent.
