INCOIS hosts 2-day Tsunami programme

A two-day first Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP) conference began at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) campus in Pragathinagar on Monday. The conference will focus on research development and implementation plan to develop warning systems capable of issuing actionable and timely warnings for tsunamis from all identified sources to 100% of coasts at risk in less than 10 minutes. Scientists from across the country and abroad will also be discussing plans on making all the coastal communities at risk be prepared and resilient to tsunamis by 2030 through programmes like the IOC-UNESCO Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP), according to director T. M. Balakrishnan Nair. Last week, INCOIS conducted a three-day fourth triennial Congress of the Federation of Indian Geosciences Associations (FIGA) – FIGA 2025 with focus on ‘Geosciences for Blue Economy’ bringing geoscientists, oceanographers, fisheries professionals, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss collaboration and innovation for addressing challenges of national and international relevance. Top scientists, including principal scientific secretary to the Central government Ajay Kumar Sood, Ministry of Earth Sciences secretary M. Ravichandran, FIGA president and Northeast Institute of Science & Technology director Virendra M. Tiwari were among those who participated, said a press release.
