In a throwback video on Instagram, Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor talked about her father, producer Boney Kapoor, and how their family’s love and perseverance helped him eventually give up smoking after an extended struggle. Speaking candidly in an interview, Janhvi explained how her family, particularly her late mother Sridevi, worked for years to help Boney quit the habit, utilising both playful and sentimental strategies that showed their profound concern for his well-being. Janhvi and her sister Khushi Kapoor started a playful but persistent campaign to stop him because they were worried about his health. “Papa was smoking a lot,” Janhvi recalled in a Pinkvilla interview, referring to the time in the mid-2000s when ‘No Entry’ was being made. “Every morning, Khushi and I would find new ways to destroy his cigarette packets. We’d cut up his cigarettes or put toothpaste on them. We tried something new every day, but nothing worked,” she said. Sridevi’s Silent Protest Boney Kapoor persisted in smoking for years despite their clever attempts at sabotage. Their late mother, legendary actor Sridevi, also joined the effort in her own powerful way. Sridevi encouraged her husband to quit by using an emotional and spiritual approach. “Mom also kept fighting with him,” Janhvi shared. “She became a vegetarian and told him, ‘I won’t start eating non-veg till you stop smoking.’” But as Sridevi’s health started to deteriorate, doctors suggested that she start eating a balanced diet again. Janhvi recalled the physicians saying, “No, you’re too weak, you need to eat.” However, Boney was deeply affected by the gesture. That emotional connection continued to influence Boney Kapoor’s decisions even after her death. Janhvi added that the breakthrough occurred a few years after Sridevi’s death. “Four or five years ago, he was just like, ‘She wanted me to stop. I couldn’t do it then. I’ll do it now.’ And he just stopped,” she added. Health experts often emphasise that motivation, support, and emotional preparedness are all necessary for quitting smoking. Boney Kapoor’s story highlights how family support, even in the form of simple, loving deeds, can have a long-lasting effect on an individual’s health.
