'I'm in my 30s and have been washing my greasy hair wrong my entire life'

A woman has been left embarrassed after realising she’s been washing her hair wrong for her whole life. She says she only ‘discovered the truth’ after watching a TikTok clip that demonstrated how to ‘resolve’ the problem she has been grappling with since childhood well into her 30s. Posting on Reddit , she revealed: “I just learnt why my hair has been so oily for nearly all of my life and I feel stupid.” She explains she has been battling greasy hair “ever since she can remember” and experimented with numerous shampoos and conditioners to tackle the problem – yet her attempts have never yielded substantial results. She commented: “I looked into clarifying shampoo and like it helped a little bit, but 24 hours later it’s be a greasy mess again!” “Then I come across a TikTok that says people with oily hair might not be rinsing out their hair all the way/using too much shampoo or conditioner, and therefore leaving an oily residue on your strands. “So I thought well, let’s give it a try. I washed my hair, and sectioned said hair into several parts when rinsing the shampoo out for a hair. “I used the smallest fraction of my usual amount of conditioners, and again sectioned while rinsing. literally took 15 minutes to make sure everything was out of it. “And you know what, my hair looks f***ing fabulous!” She reports she can now manage two days without fretting about her hair appearing a “greasy mess” – though she’s devastated it has taken her 30 years to figure this out. The woman exclaimed: “Do you know how many times I’ve just put my hair up in a bun because no other hairstyle looked good on me? “Do you know how many times I’ve given up on curling my hair because my hair couldn’t hold a curl! “I’m thinking of all the cute hairstyles that I could have had if I had known just needed to f***ing rinse my hair better for a minute or two in the shower!” “I’m in my f***ing 30s! How did I not know how to f***ing wash my hair!” One user responded to her post, saying: “Please don’t tell me you’re washing your ends and conditioning your roots. “Shampoo is for your scalp and roots and conditioner is for your lengths and ends. “The way you described it is that you’re using both products on all of your hair and that there would be why you’re having issues. Signed a retired hairstylist.” Another user chimed in: “This was a problem I ran into when I was a stylist. Client’s hair would literally get foam up when I would wash it because there was so much shampoo still on their hair.” A third user shared: “Same but different girl, I wasn’t washing stuff out properly as well and I was prone to build-up and dandruff. I felt stupid too haha. I section my hair now.”
