'I'll never forget what Ryan Reynolds did after Wrexham lost – it's a true mark of the man'

Ryan Reynolds has been praised for the classy way in which he handled a high profile Wrexham defeat. The Deadpool star bought the Red Dragons in February 2021 alongside fellow actor Rob Mac . Since then, Wrexham have been on an incredible journey, achieving three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship . The North Wales club has also become a lucrative global brand thanks to the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, which was recently commissioned for a fifth series. However, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Wrexham, particularly in their first full season under the new owners. The first chance for Phil Parkinson’s side to win some silverware came in the FA Trophy final against Bromley in May 2022. There was a star-studded guestlist at Wembley as the celebrity proprietors were joined by the likes of Will Ferrell, David Beckham and Mac’s wife Kaitlin Olson. Unfortunately, the game ended in disappointment, though, as Wrexham lost 1-0 to Bromley and later missed out on promotion to League Two after being beaten by Grimsby in a play-off semi-final clash at the Racecourse Ground. Reynolds will no doubt have felt downbeat about the trophy final defeat, with so many friends in attendance, but Bromley CEO Mark Hammond has now revealed the graceful way in which the Canadian dealt with the blow. Speaking on The Business of Sport podcast, Hammond said: “We were the underdog against Wrexham, with Ryan Reynolds, but Andy [Woodman, Bromley manager] and the team, they did it, they beat Wrexham 1-0. That moment put us on the map as ‘we’re coming’. “We were already on the journey, but that really cemented that we’re part of something, we’re onto something, and we’ve just beaten Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds and Rob. But I have to say, at the start of the game, there was the entourage, and you had David Beckham and Will Ferrell. “The mark of the man though is that after the game, 15 minutes after everybody had gone, Ryan Reynolds walked out and he shook the owner’s hand, my hand, and he stood with us for 15 minutes congratulating and talking normally, just a real human being, and I thought that was class because he could have gone home.” He added: “He had Netflix and Disney and Rolls-Royces and all of the grandiose stuff that comes with being an A-lister, but he took the time to come down and shake our hand and wish us all the best. “I’ll never forget that, and it was a moment of class, and I’ve taken that that’s how you need to act and be humble in defeat. The irony is, I don’t think it’s an act. Although they’re actors, it’s not an act, they are good people.” Despite suffering a setback during the 2021-22 campaign, Wrexham went on to win the National League title the following season with a record haul of 111 points. Automatic promotions from League Two and League One then followed, marking an unprecedented period of success in the club’s history. Wrexham are currently 15th in the Championship after playing four games so far and registered their first win away at Millwall just before the international break. Parkinson’s team, which underwent huge chances during the summer after 13 new signings were made, next face Queens Park Rangers at home on Saturday.
