IIIT-T adds new B.Tech degree courses in emerging technologies

The Indian Institute of Information Technology-Tiruchi (IIIT-T) has got a good response to its new undergraduate programmes in Computer Science Engineering – Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and Electronics and Communication Engineering – VLSI Design, Usha Natesan, director in-charge, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the institution’s convocation on Tuesday, Ms. Natesan added that IIIT-T is also conducting two short-term certificate courses under its Quality Improvement Programme for faculty members to be trained in emerging technologies, with a view to filling the shortage of teachers in these fields,

Ms. Natesan said, “With the support of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), we are conducting two postgraduate courses in ‘3-D Printing and Additive Manufacturing’ (Department of Mechanical Engineering) and ‘Machine Learning Cyber Physical Systems’ (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), to equip faculty with the skills to teach these courses in their colleges. The demand for teachers in these new subjects is very high.”

In response to a query about the need for institutes to keep abreast of evolving technologies by adapting their curriculum, Ms. Natesan said, “Skills are important everywhere. Even as new inventions are coming, we still need people who are equipped with skills to operate the machines. Though automation may have replaced manual labour in some sectors, the real shifting of skills is happening only now. We need students to be ready for the requirements of the future. We are doing the capacity building first for teachers, and will be introducing allied subjects for students soon in parallel courses such as drone operation, mechatronics and robotics, for which we are looking for industry partnerships.”

Five students of the IIIT-T have secured internship-cum-full-time offers from Amazon with a package of ₹47 lakh per annum, one has been placed with Hevo at a package of ₹30 lakh, and four have received offers from Walmart with a package of ₹23 lakh per annum.
