The Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) has secured a major boost for its farmers through a new credit sales arrangement with BonAgro Ghana Ltd and its Chinese partner, Lovol, for the acquisition of farm machinery.
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, a five-member ICOUR delegation—comprising management and farmer leaders—visited BonAgro’s offices in Tamale to assess the suitability of the company’s equipment for farming activities within ICOUR irrigation schemes.
The visit followed a request by ICOUR’s Managing Director, Mr. Dominic A. Anarigide, for farmers under ICOUR to access farm machinery through flexible credit arrangements.
During the engagement, BonAgro showcased a wide range of agricultural machinery, including tractors, crawlers, and combine harvesters supplied by Lovol.
Farmers who had previously used Lovol machines testified to their durability and efficiency, noting that some equipment had been in use for nearly eight years without major complaints.
BonAgro, which began operations in Ghana in 2013 as an agrochemical dealer before diversifying into farm machinery in 2017, is currently constructing an ultramodern office and warehouse in Tamale to make sales and spare parts more accessible to farmers in the north.
The new arrangement provides ICOUR farmers, especially members of Water Users Associations (WUAs), with a unique opportunity to acquire essential equipment to boost rice production and other farming activities. By pooling resources, farmers can now overcome mechanization challenges, improve efficiency, and increase yields within the irrigation schemes.
Mr. Anarigide emphasized that the partnership would significantly reduce the drudgery of farming and enable farmers to maximize the potential of irrigated agriculture in the Upper East Region.
He encouraged farmers to embrace the credit scheme to enhance productivity and ensure food security.
