One door closes while another reopens.
Citrus, the popular brunch spot in Virginia Beach, closed its Shore Drive location on West Great Neck Road on Sept. 9, the business announced on Facebook. No reason was disclosed.
“This space has been filled with laughter, brunches, celebrations, countless memories, and it’s all because of you,” the Sept. 10 post said.
Customers echoed the same sentiments and sadness at the loss of the iconic spot.
Lance and Cheri Shores opened the cafe in 2006 and another one in 2014 near Virginia Beach Boulevard. The couple gifted the business to their employees in 2022, after Cheri Shores was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer more than a year before. She died on May 13, 2023.
Customers can continue family traditions and make new memories at Citrus’ 357 N. Great Neck Road location, near Interstate 264.

German fare returns
Deutsche Ecke, a German restaurant in Newport News, has reopened after almost seven months.
A landscaping truck plowing the parking lot ran into the storefront at 15435 Warwick Blvd. in February, affecting the operations of the restaurant and the day care next door. The business had been open about five months.
Owners Terrence and Christiane Howell couldn’t move for financial reasons, so they decided to stay put. On Sept. 9, they welcomed their customers back to the same location, near Fort Eustis, to experience the same great menu with dishes such as jägerschnitzel (breaded pork loin), potato dumplings and a wurst plate (includes weisswurst, knockwurst and käsekrainer). The staff looks forward to seeing familiar and new faces.

Bistro to close
Gourmet Gang, a bistro and catering company, is closing its Haygood location in Virginia Beach on Sept. 26.
Yet the announcement, on Facebook, sounded optimistic about the future: “Even more exciting things are on the horizon with new storefronts set to pop up across Hampton Roads and beyond in the months ahead.”
The company has another restaurant, in the Convergence Center at 4429 Bonney Road near Town Center, Virginia Beach.
