Fleetwood Mac might be set to reunite (Picture: Michael Montfort/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images) Fleetwood Mac is reportedly in talks to return to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of their iconic Rumours album. The move is a bold one, as the band has not performed together since 2019, and have suffered a huge loss since then. In 2022, Christine McVie, who joined the group in 1970 and was married to band bassist John McVie, died from a stroke at the age of 79. Stevie Nicks commented in October 2023 that she has no desire to continue the band after McVie’s death, but apparently things have changed. A source revealed to The Sun: ‘Fleetwood Mac is discussing new projects and how to mark Rumours’ big 5-0. For certain, there is a special edition version of the album coming, which the band and label have been secretly looking at.’ But a special edition album isn’t all, the source added that a documentary of the iconic band could be on the way that explores ‘all the chaos in the studio that created the magic on record’. The band was originally in London in July 1967, with the original line-up consisting of drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, and vocalists/guitarists Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green. Spencer departed the band in 1970 after three years, and Green left a year after in 1974. Christine McVie officially joined the group in 1970, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac on the last day of 1974. Mick Campbell and Neil Finn joined the band from 2018 until 2022. In total, there have been 16 members of the band who have joined and left at different periods. The main lineup has typically been considered to be: Fleetwood, McVie, McVie, Buckingham and Nicks. The source added that the album was recorded while the McVies were divorcing, with Christine dating a lighting technician, Stevie and Lindsey’s relationship was over, and there were ‘drugs and booze’ everywhere. They added that there could be potential for a reunion tour. ‘The desire is for everyone to sit down and present their side of events on screen. And then of course, comes the potential for a stage reunion and concert. That is the goal from Mick. ‘Stevie has said it would not feel right being on stage without Christine, but also she and Lindsey are on a healing journey right now, which could be the path to a new show.’ They added that ‘a tour is unlikely at this stage’ but the group are keen to ‘pay tribute’ to Christine, and a one-off ‘show around Rumours seems a fitting way’. The hit album included many of their major hits: Dreams, Go Your Own Way, You Make Loving Fun, Don’t Stop, Songbird, and The Chain. In 2004, Rumours was remastered and reissued, with the hit track Silver Springs added to the tracklist. The group performed on stage together in January 2018, with reports of a significant disagreement between Stevie and Lindsey over their working schedule sealing the deal on their professional breakup. The album was a flop at the time of its release, and has now been remastered and released on CD, vinyl, and streaming for the first time, to the delight of fans. Mick Fleetwood commented months before that he was happy to see members become friends again: ‘I always have a fantasy that (Stevie) and Lindsey would pal up a bit more and just say everything’s OK for them both.’ Metro has reached out to Fleetwood Mac’s representatives for comment.
