I spent £3k on two recliners but the leather creased in six weeks – now DFS won’t replace them despite 15-year guarantee

Q. IN JANUARY I paid almost £3,000 for two reclining leather chairs from DFS. I was originally pleased with them but within six weeks the leather surface started to crease. I went to the store to complain and DFS sent an inspector to my home to look at them. The inspector said it is normal for leather to do this but I disagree as both the leather and the foam filling are sagging. I complained to DFS again and it said someone would come to add some extra filling to the chairs. But six months have passed and no one has come to fix them. Is there anything you can do? Lynne Ireland, Oldham. You had hoped your new chairs would last you a lifetime but within weeks they looked like they had seen better days. I could see from the pictures you sent me that the leather on the surface of the chairs had creased, making them uncomfortable to sit on. I would have expected better from DFS, which prides itself on offering high quality products and a 15 year guarantee. So I was surprised when DFS only offered to fix your chairs, instead of replace them for free. I was keen to help, so I put your case to DFS and asked it to investigate. DFS swung into action and the next day its head office team called you to say that it would take back the chairs and you could choose a replacement. On Monday you visited your local DFS store and staff helped you choose a smart two-seater settee and chair. The set was cheaper than your other reclining chairs, so you also received an £800 refund. You are very pleased with the outcome and are looking forward to enjoying your new settee. If you have a problem with a piece of furniture then take pictures of it to use as evidence.
