'I just feel sorry for the families, they're only little boys'

There was palpable shock among the residents of Moss Side today (September 16) following the tragic news a 15-year-old schoolboy had been stabbed to death on their doorstep. Greater Manchester Police were called to Moss Lane East at around 4.30pm on Monday (September 15). On arrival, officers found a teenager with ‘multiple stab wounds’. The youth, who has not yet been named, was taken to hospital but later sadly pronounced dead. Police swiftly launched a murder investigation and confirmed overnight that another 15-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody. The Manchester Evening News understands that the incident took place during a ‘disturbance’ involving multiple individuals on the street. Detectives say they are aware of a video circulating online, which is understood to relate to the incident, showing a number of what appears to be high school children engaged in a mass brawl. Greater Manchester Police are enforcing a Section 60 order until 5.20pm, which gives officers extended powers to stop and search individuals. An extensive police cordon remained in place in Moss Side today with Moss Lane East closed from Upper Lloyd Street to Broadfield Road. A steady stream of parents and children heading to school this morning stopped and looked on in shock at the scene. “It’s just so sad,” said one young girl walking to secondary school. “I can’t believe it, I’ll actually cry.” White-suited forensics officers could be seen working within the cordon, searching bushes and verges with a torch, close to a blue forensic tent which had been put up outside Moss Side Health Centre on Monton Street. Staff from the health centre were later seen visiting the cordon to recite prayers and console each other. A resident who gave her name as Kay said she had lived on the street for nearly 16 years. “It used to be nice around here,” she said. “I have four daughters, and their children go to school close by. It makes you wonder what’s going on out there. There are some horrible people out there. “I just feel sorry for the families affected – they’re only little boys.” A senior GMP officer called the murder ‘an appalling act’ as the force continue to appeal for witnesses. Chief Superintendent David Meeney, from the City of Manchester district, said: “There is a thorough investigation plan in place as we look to find the perpetrator of this appalling act that has seen a young man lose his life. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends after this tragic and upsetting incident, and our specially trained officers will be supporting them at this difficult time. “We have officers in the area as we work to establish the circumstances that led up to the incident, which will understandably have caused shock and concern within the community and the surrounding area, particularly those who witnessed it. “You will see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days, as we remain committed to providing the victim’s family with the answers they deserve. “If anyone has any information or was in the area at the time, they should contact us quoting log 2327 of 15/09/25. “Information can be reported by calling 101 or anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
