Multiple African champion Tobi Amusan won a silver medal in the 100m hurdles final at the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan.
The two-time Commonwealth Games champion clocked a time of 12.36s to win the semifinal and secure a place in the final.
The four-time African Games champion improved her time in the final to 12.29s but finished second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundi, who closed 12.24s to win gold.
The 28-year-old will receive $35,000 (₦52.5 million) for winning the silver medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles. Her world record of 12.12s was not broken, hence the $100,000 bonus is saved, per Punch.
Grace Stark of the USA settled for a bronze medal with a time of 12.34s, while Olympic champion Masai Russell failed to finish on the podium with a time of 12.44 to place fourth, per Tell.ng.
Amusan narrated what happened during the final
Three-time Diamond League winner Tobi Amusan gave an account of what transpired during the 100m hurdles final.
In a viral video, the 28-year-old said she had to take a dip to secure a silver medal for Nigeria.
The five-time African Champion explained that she saw three competitors coming close to the finish line, but had to motivate herself. Amusan spoke in pidgin:
“Nibo. Omo, I just dey dip. I say who dey dis side, I dey see like three people. I say, run o.
“O boy, hurdles hard o, I no go lie. Every hurdle, e be like say everybody dey zoom dey come. I say suu, un no dey wait.”
Amusan had called out the AFN for failing to provide proper kits to athletes ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.
She expressed frustration, accusing Nigeria’s sports authorities of embarrassing the country on the global stage.

AFN president fires back at Tobi Amusan
Legit.ng earlier reported that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has pushed back strongly against Tobi Amusan’s claims of poor treatment at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
AFN President Tonobok Okowa insisted the federation provided full kits for the team and even gave Amusan special treatment, including a business class flight to Japan.
