I can’t go back to the regular DualSense controller

The PS5 is my primary gaming console, but I’ve never considered getting the DualSense Edge controller. Sure, I was intrigued by this highly customizable (and very expensive) “pro” controller. But since I’m not a professional gamer and the regular DualSense controller suits my needs, I didn’t see a reason to upgrade.

Last month, a DualSense Edge arrived at our NYC-based office, which finally gave me a chance to (literally) go hands-on with the controller. From the moment I unboxed and took it from its carrying case, I immediately fell in love with the peripheral. And now, after using it for a month, I can say that my initial impression was justified. This is one damn good controller.
You can read our full DualSense Edge review for all the details, but I want to share my thoughts as someone who has used PlayStation controllers for the past 30 years. With respect to Xbox and Nintendo, PlayStation controllers have always been my favorite, and the DualSense Edge is the best one I’ve tried. Yes, it’s pricey, but it’s also incredible. Here’s why.

PS5 DualSense Edge controller: $199 at Amazon
Take your PS5 gaming up a level with the DualSense Edge. The first official “pro” controller created by Sony, it’s the most premium version of the DualSense, allowing you to fully customise your play experience. You tweak stick sensitivity and dead zones, and even remap each button individually. Plus, it includes adjustable back buttons.

It’s all about the feel

The DualSense Edge’s customizable design is the main selling point. However, what I love most about the controller is how it feels when you’re holding it. As we said in our review, it just feels premium, and that’s largely because of its weight.

At 11.7 ounces, the DualSense Edge is about 15% heavier than the standard DualSense. The latter has nice heft to it, but I love that the Edge weighs just a bit more. That weight makes it feel like a weapon, which is great for immersion since I mostly play action games. The controller’s durable build and contoured handles enhance the experience.
One of the controller’s standout features is its optional metallic back buttons (or paddles). I appreciate how there’s one pair shaped like crescent moons and another like standard levers. That said, I rarely use these back buttons. I prefer to keep them off since I don’t play many games that require me to use back paddles. But if I ever need to, I’m glad the option exists.
Design-wise, the DualSense Edge isn’t a radical departure from the regular DualSense. That’s good, because you still get the same core experience, just upgraded, thanks to the added heft and sturdier build. This is something you have to experience for yourself to really appreciate.

Other aspects I like

The face buttons, D-pad, and analog sticks don’t feel all that different from the DualSense’s. The same is true for the L1 and R1 shoulder buttons. However, the L2 and R2 triggers now have little bumps on their tips to prevent your fingers from slipping off. The latter buttons also have three separate stop sliders to reduce travel distance, which is a handy feature for fans of first-person shooting games.
Stick drift is a common problem for game controllers, which is why many third-party companies like 8BitDo, GameSir and PDP use more durable Hall Effect analog sticks for their controllers. The DualSense Edge doesn’t sport that technology, but you can swap out faulty sticks for replacement modules that Sony sells for $20. Swapping out the sticks is easy thanks to a slider on the controller’s rear. That said, I would have preferred if Sony had opted for Hall Effect sticks.
The touchpad might not be the most exciting thing here, but it’s still a nice improvement. It feels bulkier and clickier, and I like how it has little PlayStation symbols across its surface. While the touchpad is basically a glorified Select button in most games, I appreciate that Sony gave the touchpad on the DualSense Edge a nice upgrade.
My new go-to PS5 controller
Again, you can read our DualSense Edge review for a full breakdown of its features, but suffice it to say that I’m in love with this controller and don’t see myself going back to a standard DualSense.
While I’m not enamored with its sub-8-hour battery life and $199 asking price, the controller’s exceptional feel and smooth gaming performance more than make up for that. It’s not just a fantastic PS5 controller, but also great for PC gaming. If you’ve got the cash for it or can wait for the inevitable sale during the holidays, I strongly recommend the DualSense Edge. You won’t be disappointed.
