Dear GhanaWeb, I’m a 28-year-old nurse who is so passionate about my job. I became a nurse professionally about four years ago. Initially, my dream wasn’t to be a nurse but something terrible happened and I had to change my mind about my career path. I lost my mother five years ago. She was ill for some time and so I took her to the hospital and they suggested surgery. We didn’t have the kind of money we were asked to pay but I promised my mother I was going to try my best and raise the money. I did everything I could to get the money but I didn’t succeed. One morning after checking on her at the hospital, a friend called me to come for the loan I asked for so I had to quickly rush for the money. Few minutes after I left, the doctor called me to return to the hospital. When I got there, I was told that my mother had died. I was so broken. That’s when I decided to become a nurse or doctor so I could help humanity. Now, to the reason I’m writing this. I was on the night shift at work when a guy managed to bring himself into the hospital. He was bleeding profusely and it looked like he was shot. I helped him get admitted, but he was unconscious. I helped clean his wound. The next morning, the news was everywhere that some robbers attacked a shop. During the robbery, the guy took off his mask just because he wanted to help some of the buyers in the shop escape. Clearly, he’s not a professional. They were five armed robbers. Four were shot dead by the police and only he was able to escape. I was so shocked when I saw his picture in the news, realising he was the same guy in my hospital. The police began their investigation and the CCTV of a nearby shop directed them to the hospital. I had to lie that I didn’t see anyone of that sort. I had to quickly plan something so I don’t get into trouble. Honestly, the guy looked innocent even though I’ve not heard his side of the story. I decided to take him out of the hospital to my house. I live very far from the hospital so no one could suspect he’s with me. The guy narrated what happened that night, saying he’s not an armed robber. He said he joined the guys after he asked his friend for a loan to save his dying father. His friend said he didn’t have the money and he also didn’t know that friend was the leader of the armed robbery group. According to him, this friend is very rich but he doesn’t tell anyone what he does for a living. It was on that day when he found out that his friend told him that if he truly wanted to save his father then he should join his boys to go rob a shop. He didn’t know what to do than to accept the offer. He was also able to escape with part of the money they robbed. His story really touched me so I told him to stay in my house till the case dies. He gave me the money to go give to his sister so they could commence his father’s treatment, to which I did. He stayed with me for three weeks while the investigation was still ongoing. It had been announced that anyone who would help find him would be rewarded GH¢100,000.00 and this scared him after he saw the news because he thought I would betray him and go for the money. He’s actually a nice guy and has been helping with chores, as well cooking for me whenever I leave for work. Eventually, I fell in love with him. He also told me how he feels about me but he’s not a free man yet. We both have soft spots for each other and no one knows he’s in my house, not even my friends. He said he would surrender himself to the police because he feels guilty everyday and that he didn’t want to put me in trouble. How will I watch a man I fell in love with be in jail? At this point, I’m so confused and don’t know what to do. Should I let him surrender to the police? Or should I continue to keep him in my home and continue our love story?
