Hyderabad IMD Warns of Floods As City Braces for Heavy Rain Ahead of Cyclone Montha’s Landfall

Hyderabad: As Cyclone Montha moves closer to the east coast, Hyderabad is bracing for spells of intense rainfall and potential flooding over the next 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the city will begin feeling the cyclone’s impact from Tuesday evening, with heavy rain, waterlogging, and gusty winds likely to disrupt daily life. When Will Cyclone Montha Make Landfall? According to GNRS Srinivasa Rao, IMD Telangana Meteorologist, the storm is strengthening rapidly. “By tomorrow morning, it will become a severe cyclone and reach coastal Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to cross the coast of Andhra Pradesh by tomorrow evening or night between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around the Kakinada area,” Rao said. Most coastal and adjoining districts of Andhra Pradesh are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds from Tuesday onwards. Rain Forecast for Hyderabad The IMD’s seven-day forecast shows generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall starting October 29, intensifying on October 31, when heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the city. “Hyderabad will also experience cloudiness and frequent spells of rain from tomorrow evening... Even moderate rain will cause floods in many areas. It is not advisable to travel from tomorrow afternoon onwards till the day after tomorrow night,” Rao cautioned. The department has issued an orange alert for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu districts, while Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Medak, Sangareddy, and Vikarabad have been placed under a yellow alert. The IMD has also advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay alert for possible flash floods in low-lying areas. What Residents Should Watch Out ForHyderabad’s temperature is expected to hover around 30–32 degrees Celsius through the week, with humidity levels touching 88% on rain-heavy days. With already saturated grounds and the forecast of continuous rainfall, even moderate showers could lead to flooding in city pockets, traffic snarls, and disruptions in public transport. Authorities are urging citizens to monitor weather updates and stay prepared as the city braces for another intense spell of monsoon fury driven by Cyclone Montha.
