In today’s interconnected world, which remains heavily dominated by social media, vacations are no longer just to explore and relax. They have become a crucial part of digital performance. Recently, a medical professional’s thoughts about how people experience holidays sparked a conversation on the internet as she pointed out how travel nowadays has completely lost the purpose to rest and rejuvenate. On November 3, Dr Sunita Sayammagaru shared in a post on X how people these days treat holidays as a to-do list and look forward to visiting as many locations as possible, rather than actually enjoying the overall experience. “People now-a-days go on a holiday and come back tired! We go on a holiday and come back relaxed,” Dr Sayammagaru wrote. Why Do Vacations Feel Tiring and Not Refreshing Anymore? Dr Sayammagaru said that when she and her family are on a holiday, they follow a simple approach. They have a single location on their checklist and enjoy it in a “leisure manner”. “We go on a holiday, and just visit that one place or perhaps a neighboring place. We visit places in a leisure manner. We know we can’t visit ALL the places. But whatever we are visiting we enjoy. If we can’t visit all the places, we are fine with it,” she wrote. However, she thinks that the approach that several travellers follow is completely different. Most of the time, she has observed that people “are in a rush, they want to visit everything, like ticking off items in their list.” By following this process, they often end up getting stressed. “They aren’t even enjoying the places that they are visiting currently, they are in a rush to move to the next place,” she said. She further questioned what is the point of going on a vacation and it becomes stressful and not relaxing. People now-a-days go on a holiday and come back tired!!! We go on a holiday and come back relaxed. I observed the difference. We go on a holiday, and just visit that one place or perhaps a neighboring place. We visit places in a leisure manner. We know we can't visit ALL the… — Sunita Sayammagaru Her views were supported by many in the comments section of the post, while some of the users defended travellers highlighting that people usually travel on a budget. Netizens React One person wrote that people do this as their “happiness does not come from holidays and leisure but from the dopamine rush they get from the social media attention.” Dr Sayammagaru, in reply, said it was “true”. Another X user pointed out that “not everyone has that luxury” as everybody can’t visit “Eiffel Tower in one trip then do a second trip to see the Louvre Museum.” Replying to the person, Dr Sayammagaru said it seems “OK” for foreign tours, but she was “talking only about India trips.” Perhaps out of country is OK….but within country??? I was talking only about India trips. — Sunita Sayammagaru When a person said that people remain tight on budget and look forward to “finishing max in that journey,” Dr Sayammagaru said “in the process they get stressed.” “If one isn’t stressed, then visit as many places as you want. But, if the outcome of the holiday is stress, then somewhere that person is going wrong, isn’t it?” she wrote. Agree…..but in the process they get stressed. If one isn't stressed, then visit as many places as you want. But, if the outcome of the holiday is stress, then somewhere that person is going wrong, isnt it?? — Sunita Sayammagaru One user quipped that after the COVID-19 pandemic “people are rushing to every other place like the world is going to end soon.” Another shared that when on a vacation, they “want to explore, see various attractions, experience the culture and eat the food.”
