Hurricane Melissa is within hours of what is likely to be a catastrophic landfall in Jamaica, bringing with it destructive rains and winds. The outer bands of the category 5 hurricane have been pummeling Jamaica since Monday night, leaving wind and flood damage in their wake. This is the most powerful hurricane ever to make landfall in Jamaica and residents have been repeatedly warned to shelter in place. Jamaica’s Health Minister has confirmed that three lives were lost as people prepared for the hurricane’s onslaught, including a healthcare worker who succumbed to injuries when a tree fell on him. Weather experts have indicated that Melissa has eclipsed Katrina on the infamous list of the most intense Atlantic cyclones. Melissa is set to make a second landfall in Eastern Cuba Tuesday night, before battering southern islands of The Bahamas.
