The seventh annual Diabetes Awareness Walkathon in La Cala de Mijas brought hundreds of people together for fresh air, camaraderie and the opportunity to contribute to a good cause. On Sunday November 2, more than 200 people took part in the five-kilometre walk along the Boardwalk, enjoying the sea air and supporting a cause that affects many families. Organised by the Diabetic Support Group, part of the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, the event once again showed the community’s strong support for diabetes awareness and healthy living. The Diabetic Support Group was founded in 2003 and runs regular meetings, free glucose and blood pressure checks, and educational talks by healthcare professionals. It aims to help people with diabetes manage their condition while promoting early testing and healthy lifestyle habits across the Costa del Sol. Families, residents and visitors joined in, with walkers of all ages and abilities completing the route. Many praised how well it was organised and the friendly atmosphere. Organisers said a light coastal breeze, clear skies and a warm sense of community spirit made for ideal walking conditions. The starting area also hosted a small market with stalls selling handmade crafts, local produce and gifts. Bagpiper Leslie Thompson entertained the crowd, while live music from Sean and other local performers kept the energy high. Lisa from Thrive led warm-up exercises before the walk began. The event was supported by Mijas Town Hall’s Sports Department and the La Cala de Mijas Foreign Residents Department. Organisers thanked all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters, including restaurant El Cortijillo, for helping make the day a success. Funds raised will support diabetes education and awareness projects across the Costa del Sol, helping provide information and guidance to those affected. A spokesperson for the Diabetic Support Group said the turnout was “a great reflection of local community spirit.” The Lions Club will continue its efforts throughout November with more activities to mark World Diabetes Day, encouraging early detection and healthy habits.
