Hundreds arrested in nationwide raids

Police came across a firearm part being manufactured by a 3D printer as officers carried out one of more than 200 raids in a week of action. Officers said the increasing presence of 3D printed firearms was “concerning”, adding the items are “more sophisticated” through improved technology. The week-long operation, conducted from October 13 to 19, involved the Australian Border Force, police from all states and territories, the Australian Federal Police, and New Zealand Police. ABF Commander Graeme Campbell said the operation was a major success. “The importation of firearms and firearm parts is a serious concern. These items can be assembled into untraceable and dangerous weapons that pose a real risk to our communities,” Mr Campbell said. During the operation, authorities seized 719 whole firearms, 489 firearm parts, 281 3D-printed or privately manufactured firearms and parts, 64 imitation firearms or gel blasters, over $250,000 in cash, prohibited drugs, and other illegal items. The operation also resulted in 854 charges, 21 firearm prohibition orders, and 35 firearms licence suspensions. Detective Superintendent John Watson, National Chair of the Illicit Firearms Working Group and Commander of NSW Police’s Drug and Firearms Squad, said the operation sent a strong message to criminals. “Privately manufactured firearms present a fast-evolving challenge, but by combining intelligence, resources, and expertise, we’ve disrupted criminal activity and made our streets safer,” Mr Watson said. Superintendent Watson warned that 3D-printed components, while sometimes appearing harmless, can quickly become lethal weapons. “These operations aren’t just about seizures. Every illicit firearm we remove is one less threat to public safety,” he said.
