Hulu has ordered an exciting upcoming series that could serve as an Ozark replacement. Starring Jason Bateman in the lead role, Ozark was a multi-season Netflix crime series that achieved critical acclaim. Across its four-season tenure, it won 4 Emmys and was nominated for a couple of dozen others. Ozark was co-created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams. Dubuque is also known as a writer on both Accountant movies, including the 2025 release The Accountant 2. As revealed by Variety, Hulu has now ordered a new series with a connection to Dubuque. The platform is set to make a new crime series called Southern Bastards. Dubuque wrote the show's teleplay and is an executive producer. He also has a story credit, shared with Candyman director Nia DaCosta. The series is based on the graphic novels of the same name. Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, who created the original comics, are also serving as executive producers. The source material focused on a fictionalized town in the American South. There, football was of tantamount importance, but while the sports fans are cheering, people are also getting away with crimes. The series chronicles how the town reacts when faced with new enemies. Similarly, the logline for the project reads as follows: “a tenacious military vet into Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. What she finds is a murderous hornet’s nest of organized crime run by the winningest high school football coach in the South.” The vet in question most likely refers to Roberta Tubb, one of the main characters in Aaron and Latour's original comic series. Given the creators' role as executive producers, as well as the current logline, it seems like the Southern Bastards TV adaptation will be fairly faithful to its source material. In addition to her role as co-story creator, DaCosta will also direct the series pilot. The showrunner will be Matt Olmstead, who also executive produces. Additional executive producers include Layne Eskridge and Gabriel Nadig. Southern Bastards could be a great chance for Hulu to break into the crime series world in a way they haven't yet. The platform has already tried to do so recently with the series Good American Family, but this did not reach nearly the same level of respect as something like Ozark.
