Rumors of a former WWE world champion making a grand return to the company have been dismissed. Claims were made on social media that Alberto Del Rio is preparing for a WWE comeback. This has been dismissed by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful. It was noted that WWE has been trying to distance itself from Del Rio for quite some time. Despite his popularity under the AAA banner, where he worked as Alberto El Patron, Del Rio hasn’t been featured since losing a match to El Mesias back in July. The match had a stipulation to write Del Rio off AAA TV, although he had a house show run afterwards. He quickly made his way to the company’s main event scene as a heel character. At the conclusion of “SummerSlam 2011,” Del Rio successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on CM Punk to win the WWE Championship. Ultimately, Del Rio had four world title reigns under the WWE banner, including another run with the WWE Championship and two runs with the World Heavyweight Championship. On Aug. 7, 2014, Del Rio was released from his WWE contract. In a brief statement, WWE claimed Del Rio was fired for “unprofessional conduct” and having an altercation with an employee. Del Rio returned to WWE the following year, defeating John Cena for the WWE United States Championship at “Hell in a Cell.” He later joined the League of Nations, which featured Sheamus, Wade Barrett, and Rusev. At “WrestleMania 32,” League of Nations defeated The New Day before being attacked by WWE legends “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, and Mick Foley. On Sept. 9, 2016, Del Rio and WWE agreed to part ways. This marked the end of Del Rio’s last stint with the company.
