India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the UAE, and several other countries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East experienced internet outages after undersea cables in the Red Sea were damaged. Following multiple fibre cuts, Microsoft announced on September 4 that Azure users might face service disruptions, while Amazon Web Services (AWS) rerouted traffic through alternative network pathways to minimise impact.
Although the disruptions didn’t lead to a complete blackout, each provider lost part of its international transit capacity, according to AP. The incident has sparked widespread curiosity about the undersea or submarine cables that quietly carry the world’s data beneath the oceans.
