To say that UCLA has struggled out of the gates would be an understatement. Losses to Utah (43-10), UNLV (30-23), and New Mexico (35-10) led to a change at head coach, with Deshaun Foster out and Tim Skipper in. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the New Mexico loss, where UCLA was outgained 450-326 at home and was penalized a whopping 13 times for 116 yards.
Northwestern is also in need of a win, with a 42-7 throttling of Western Illinois followed up by a disappointing 34-14 loss at home to Oregon. While nobody expected an upset, Northwestern didn’t cross the endzone until there was 6:20 left in the game, on a 1-yard touchdown run from Caleb Komolafe. The Wildcats got solid production on the ground, gaining 178 yards on 37 carries, but managed just 135 yards passing, including two interceptions.
