For the first time ever an African nation will play host to cycling’s blue ribband event as the 2025 Road World Championships head to Rwanda. Never before has the continent welcomed the world’s best riders and they will face some of the hardest courses ever devised in what will prove to be a unique edition of the event.

Sitting at an altitude of 1850 metres above sea level, Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda is set to provide one of the toughest venues for the Road World Championships in many years. This cycling mad nation, land locked in the centre of Africa, which goes by the nickname, ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills’ has produced a series of brutal courses which will test all riders to their limits.
Featuring more climbing than any previous World Championships the Elite men face 5,475 metres of elevation gain over the 267.5 kilometres of their road race and the Elite women 3,350 metres in their 164.6 kilometres.
Due to the exceptionally hilly nature of the routes many big names have simply decided not to come. Stars such as Wout van Aert, Mads Pedersen and 2023 world champion Mathieu van der Poel in the mens race and double women’s world champion Lotte Kopecky took one look at the courses and knew they wouldn’t have a chance so decided to stay at home.
Of course, you could say only one rider has a chance in the men’s race anyway, the one and only Tadej Pogačar. Such is his dominance, his overwhelming superiority that even before he starts he will have one hand on the rainbow jersey for a second time in succession.
Lining up beside him though, in the faint hope that he has a bad day will be amongst many others the 2022 champion Remco Evenepoel, four time Vuelta winner Primož Roglič, the Irish sensation Ben Healy and the British duo of Tom Pidcock and Oscar Onley.
Likewise in the women’s race some people are already ready to hang the jersey on the shoulders of the 2014 winner Pauline Ferrand-Prévot such has been her class this year but she will face stiff competition from the likes of Juliette Labous, Marlen Reusser, Cédrine Kerbaol and Marianne Vos.
In total there are 13 world titles up for grabs over the seven days of the event starting with the elite time trials where favourite in the Women’s will be 2023 champion Chloe Dygert. In the men’s race the favourite has to be the current champion Remco Evenepoel but as Pogacar has publicly stated he would like to win both the Road Race and the Time Trial then few would bet against him.
