Adnan Syed is back in the spotlight as a new episode of the HBO documentary series about his life debuts online this week — more than six years after its original run in 2019.

Syed’s story was first chronicled in the popular podcast Serial, which followed the arrest and conviction of the Baltimore native, after he was accused in the 1999 murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Though Syed had long maintained his innocence, jurors found the then-18-year-old guilty of first degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

But after the Serial podcast amplified his case, Syed was eventually released from prison in 2022 after a judge overturned his conviction. The case would be in and out of courts for the years following, before a Baltimore judge agreed earlier this year to reduce Syed’s sentence to time served, under a new state law for people convicted of crimes committed when they were minors (his murder conviction, however, still stands).

The latest chapter in Syed’s saga is explored in the new Case Against Adnan Syed episode, which is titled “Part Five: The Tree Grew.” The episode airs on TV on HBO on September 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The Case Against Adnan Syed New Episode Details, Spoilers

According to an HBO description, the new episode, “chronicles the turns in the case that unfold after a suspect from the original investigation into Lee’s murder is caught assaulting a woman. This development leads Adnan’s legal team to revisit the case and demand a new investigation. When the state attorney’s office steps in, the prosecution pushes back, resulting in a legal and political tug of war that thrusts Adnan’s case into chaotic uncertainty.”

Directed by Oscar-nominated director Amy J. Berg, the new episode in the documentary series will feature Syed himself, in interviews from prison as he advocates for his release. HBO says the episode will also follow Syed’s “eventual reunion with family after 23 years behind bars.”

“How many different ways can these people try to hide from the truth?” Syed says in a trailer for episode five. “I’d just be grateful to make it home to my family without having to plead guilty.”
