San Antonio looks to take the next step in its rebuild, with 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembenyama healthy after missing most of the second half of last season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, rejoining 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and the No. 2 overall pick in June’s draft, Dylan Harper out of Rutgers. The Spurs added a second lottery pick in Arizona forward Carter Bryant at No. 14 overall and added veteran big man depth with the additions of Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. San Antonio also signed guard De’Aaron Fox to an extension in August after he was acquired from the Sacramento Kings in a February trade.
The Heat acquired Norman Powell from the LA Clippers in an attempt to spark the offense and drafted Illinois playmaker Kasparas Jakucionis with the 20th overall pick in June. Precious Achiewa returns to Miami as a free agent, and Miami acquired Italian wing Simone Fontecchio in the sign-and-trade that sent Duncan Robinson to the Detroit Pistons. Gone from last season are veterans Kyle Anderson, Alec Burks, and Kevin Love.
The Spurs opened their preseason with a 119-88 victory over the Guangzhou Loong-Lions from China, while Miami fell to 0-2 with a 103-93 loss to the visiting Miami Heat, with both games on Monday night.
