The Road Race at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships is the first to take place in Africa, and they’re already calling it the toughest too. Not only does the 267.5km route pack in 5,475m of climbing and a multitude of jangling cobbled sections, but the entire race is taking place at altitude.

Rwanda’s mountainous terrain inspired the moniker “Pays des mille collines”, meaning “Land of a thousand hills”, and its capital Kigali was itself named after the ridge that dominates the western edge of the city, with Mount Jali to the north. At its lowest, the city sits 1,300m above sea level.
That’s what makes this Road Race so difficult to predict. The route itself has drawn comparisons with the Amstel Gold Race, which incidentally produced a shock back in April, Mattias Skjelmose pipping Tadej Pogacar to the line and Remco Evenepoel finishing 3rd. Throw in the altitude factor, and the odds of another surprise look good.
Having bested rainbow jersey holder Pogacar in the time trial earlier this week, 2022 world road cycling champion Evenepoel will fancy his chances, but the Slovenian has a superb support team that includes Primoz Roglic. Isaac del Toro, who’s had a breakthrough year on tour, and Tom Pidcock look the likeliest to keep pace.
The race comprises 15 laps around a 15.1km city circuit, nine preceding and six succeeding a mid-race detour that incorporates climbs up Côte de Péage (1.8km at 5.9%), Mont Kigali (5.9km at 6.9%) — the peak of which is 1,771m above sea level — and Mur de Kigali (0.4km at 11%).
