The AL East title is no longer an option for the Boston Red Sox, so all focus shifts to the Wild Card, and on Friday, Sept. 26, they host the Detroit Tigers for the first of three-game set to close the regular season at Fenway Park in Boston.
This Friday Night Baseball game is scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast exclusively on Apple TV+. The Red Sox are 87-72 and the Tigers are 86-73. Boston currently holds the second Wild Card spot and Detroit is in possession of the final Wild Card spot with the Houston Astros lurking, just one game back. Detroit is also tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the top spot in the AL Central, so there are still multiple paths forward for the Tigers.
The Red Sox are coming off a 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that ended any chance they had of winning the AL East. However, the winner of the division is still an important matter for Boston, because right now, it would be matched up with the New York Yankees in a Wild Card series because the Blue Jays own the tiebreaker against the Yankees for the division crown. Either New York or Toronto will host a Wild Card series and the winner of the division will be battling with the Seattle Mariners for the top overall seed in the AL.
Back in May, the Tigers swept the Red Sox over three games in Detroit, but two of those contests were 1-run games, and one went to extra innings. With a win or a loss by the Astros, the Red Sox will clinch a postseason berth.
