The seventh-ranked Michigan Wolverines made a stunning turnaround in 2024-25 and look to make a deep March run as they open the season against a deep Oakland Golden Grizzlies squad on Monday night. Oakland slipped to 16-18 last season after upsetting Kentucky in the first round of the 2024 NCAA tournament and has the longest-tenured coach in the nation in Greg Kampe, back for his 42nd season on the bench. Returnee Buru Naivalurua leads a big-man group that also includes transfers Isaac Garrett (junior college) and Michael Houge (Jacksonville State). Guard Brody Robinson (Texas-Arlington) brings experience to the backcourt. The Golden Grizzlies face a gauntlet to open the season, with trips to No. 1 Purdue and No. 2 Houston following the game in Ann Arbor. Michigan split two exhibitions, losing to Cincinnati 100-98 on Oct. 17 and beating St. John’s 96-94 in overtime on Oct. 25. Oakland also played a pair of exhibitions, posting a 111-77 win over Alma on Oct. 22 and topping Rochester Christian 99-90 on Thursday. The Wolverines are 8-1 all-time against the Golden Grizzlies and have won seven in a row.
