Two of the top teams in Europe square off in a marquee match on Wednesday, as Manchester City plays host to Borussia Dortmund in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League. Watch the Champions League on Paramount+ (7-day free trial) The UEFA Champions League, formerly known as the European Cup, is a time-honored tournament where the best teams across the continent come together to determine who the best club in Europe. In the league phase, teams play eight matches, with the top eight clubs advancing to the Round of 16, while the clubs that finish between ninth and 24th place are forced to go to the knockout phase play-offs. Manchester City and Dortmund are currently fighting to get into the top eight. The clubs sit level with seven points apiece, but Dortmund currently sits in eighth thanks to the tiebreaker. City is coming into Wednesday looking to build some momentum in UCL play following a 2-0 win over Villarreal last month. The English Premier League powerhouse began its Champions League season with a win over Napoli before drawing with Monaco. Dortmund opened its UCL schedule with a wild 4-4 draw with Juventus back in September. The Bundesliga side has taken care of business in its last two matches, beating Athletic Club Bilbao and Copenhagen by multiple goals.
