How Eddie Giacomin's controversial Rangers exit unfolded

Funny how things work.
It was Halloween 1975, and I was just a few weeks into my first real job. I had just started as a clerk in The Post’s sports department, where I worked the late-night or overnight shift.
I was picking up shifts a few nights a week. A voucher employee. At that time, writers would call the office to dictate their stories to a reel-to-reel tape recorder just like the one that Rose Mary Woods once fiddled with at the White House during the Nixon Administration.
Then a clerk, which was me on that Friday, would transcribe it and send it to print. One of my first days on the job, I erased the first couple of paragraphs from veteran Leonard Lewin’s piece about the Knicks. Lewin had dictated early in the evening. I had waited to transcribe it until well after midnight.
