House District 70: Shelly Simonds wins reelection

Democrat incumbent Del. Shelly Simonds secured another two-year term after winning reelection in Tuesday’s election. Simonds was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2019 as a representative of House District 94. She then ran as an incumbent after redistricting and won District 70, which covers western and northwestern Newport News, in 2023. As of 10:10 p.m. with 61% of votes counted Tuesday, Simonds received 65% of votes, according to unofficial election results. Republican opponent Cynthia Scaturico received more than 33% of the vote, and independent John Bloom received nearly 2%. Scaturico and Bloom are both newcomers to Virginia politics. Scaturico held a board of supervisors seat in Iowa before moving to Newport News and winning the Republican nomination, while Bloom was a late addition to the ballot running a Libertarian campaign. Simonds said her biggest priorities for her upcoming term are improving affordability and health care access for families, and touted her record of working across the aisle to create bipartisan legislation.
