Hotel To Expand Into Former Stamford YMCA Building

The Stamford Zoning Board voted on the plans during its Oct. 6 meeting.
STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Zoning Board on Oct. 6 unanimously approved expansion plans for The Lloyd Hotel on Washington Boulevard
Owned by RMS-Hotel 1 LLC, The Lloyd Hotel will renovate the interior of the existing building at 909 Washington Blvd., which formerly housed the Stamford YMCA, to increase the number of guestrooms by 52 to 146, create a restaurant, courtyard and other amenities.
The building was constructed in the early 1970s and served as a typical downtown YMCA, with a pool, gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms, and 136 rental rooms.
In 2008, the rental room portion of the building, which is the larger tower section, was sold to RMS Companies, which turned the building into Hotel Zero Degrees, according to William Hennessey, attorney for RMS-Hotel 1 LLC, who presented the plans to the Zoning Board on Sept. 29.
About five-and-a-half years ago, the hotel underwent a major renovation and was converted into The Lloyd Hotel. Just last year, the Stamford YMCA closed its doors and effectively went out of business.
The city of Stamford pursued a purchase of the balance of the building, but it was ultimately sold to RMS.
An area of the old swimming pool will be removed to create an at-grade, street level courtyard, according to Hennessey.
A floor will be inserted at the midway point of the old gymnasium to house guest rooms, Hennessey noted.
Floor area will be added to the roof of the old gymnasium for restrooms, a basic storage area and “some kind of food service element” that will serve as a rooftop amenity, Hennessey said.
Hennessey spoke about the hotel’s adjacency to the Stamford Transportation Center and heavily-populated office buildings in the area.
The Zoning Board voiced support for the project during its Oct. 6 meeting, and approved the project will several conditions after a brief rundown of the plans.
