Horror fan gets 2ft tattoo of Ed Gein on his leg – but there's one major issue

A horror enthusiast has had a whopping 2ft tattoo of Ed Gein inked down the front of his leg - but social media users were quick to point out a glaring issue. Tyler Lute decided on the elaborate design as a tribute to the Butcher of Plainfield on October 16, in a "spur of the moment" decision fuelled by his love for horror and the Netflix series. However, after showing off the mammoth tattoo , which took a staggering seven hours to finish, social media users were taken aback to see actor Charlie Hunnam's face staring back at them instead of Ed's. The design, crafted by Danny Jones, features a large portrait of Charlie Hunnam portraying Ed in the Netflix series, along with a smaller image of him donning a skin mask. At the bottom is a torn piece of newspaper from Gein's local paper, the Wisconsin State Journal, publicising his horrific crimes, accompanied by the word "monster". Some social media users were shocked that the 6ft 6in carer chose to immortalise a serial killer on his body, while many were puzzled that he opted for the actor who portrayed him, rather than the man himself. The choice was made by tattoo artist Danny, who offered a horror-themed tattoo for free on social media and selected Tyler's suggestion, wanting to base it on the popular Netflix portrayal. Delighted Tyler, 35, has brushed off criticism about his "godfather of horror" tattoo, which would have cost around $1,200, and already has plans for another "macabre" tattoo on his left leg. Tyler, hailing from Portsmouth, Ohio, US, shared: "I liked the Netflix series a lot. It was pretty disturbing but I like watching scary, macabre stuff so it didn't really bother me. "I gave Danny artistic freedom on the tattoo and he wanted to do the Monster Ed Gein from the series and this is what he did. "I think I will do the front of my other leg in something weird and macabre as well." Tyler's inspiration for the tattoo dedicated to the infamous serial killer and grave robber came after watching the Ryan Murphy show. Tyler revealed: "I had recently watched the new Ed Gein series and I suggested him, as it was unique and no one else was saying it. "Danny said he liked the idea and told me to come and get the tattoo. I love horror anyway and I thought 'let's do it'. "It was very painful on the front of the leg and the most painful tattoo I've had. It takes a lot of talent and a lot of time to do a tattoo this well. "I absolutely love it and it's my favourite piece. There is no regret having Ed Gein tattooed on my leg. "Ed was misunderstood and he was very mentally ill, he had no one to help him and he was left alone. "It was just unfortunate what happened there and sad at the same time. I think if there was someone to help him, I don't think he would have gone that way. "With all the horror films he has inspired like Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs, Norman Bates, he is very popular in the horror movie genre. "He is like the godfather of horror and I have no regret about it [the tattoo]. "People can think whatever they want to think about it. I'm my own person and I like it and that's all that matters." Edward Gein, born in 1906, was an infamous American murderer who served as the chilling inspiration for numerous fictional serial killers depicted in iconic films such as Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs. Danny Jones, a seasoned tattoo artist with 12 years under his belt, believes that such designs merely reflect the customer's interests and are not intended to stir up controversy. Danny shared: "Generally, I don't think much about the tattoos people get. A lot of people are infatuated with the horror genre of tattoos. "I like tattooing pop culture pieces and with this new depiction of Ed Gein, there seems to be a decent amount of controversy. "[I don't like that], however these are just representations of an interest in horror most of the time, the clients don't think that murder is good, or cool, they just like scary things." After posting a video showcasing the detailed Ed Gein tattoo on his TikTok page, the clip quickly amassed over 23,000 likes and 600,000 views, with users divided over their opinions on the design. One user remarked: "That's weird. But tattooing an actor instead of the real Ed Gein is doubly weird." Another queried: "So why not tattoo the actual guy instead [of] Jax Teller." One chimed in: "Cool, but I would have got the real Ed Gein." However, some were less than thrilled with the idea of tattoos honouring real-life serial killers. One social media user penned: "Obviously this is really well done but tattooing actual serial killers (I know this is Charlie Hunnam) is weird af. Another chimed in with: "Why are we all getting serial killers tattooed on our bodies then?" "A third added: "Wonder what the victims' families feel about this. "Despite some controversy surrounding the tattoo, many were enamoured with the final result. One admirer wrote: "It's a class tattoo, just a bit weird. "Another defended the artwork, stating: "I don't know why everyone is being snowflakes, it's amazing."
