Horrified This Morning fans gasped ‘this is a new low’ as a guest called the AI version of his dead mother live on Monday’s episode of the ITV show in ‘disturbing and sickening’ scenes.
Tech entrepreneur Justin Harrison, who is founder of You, Only Virtual (YOV), appeared on the programme live from Los Angeles to talk to Cat Deeley, 48, and Ben Shephard, 50, about his creation.
Justin’s mum passed away three years ago, and to this day can still speak to her on the phone after curating old texts, videos, voice notes, and emails to create an AI version of her.
He explained that he decided to create Versona after a near-death motor bike accident, and while he was recovering, his mum was given a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Justin called the digital version of his late mum to give an example of how it works, and said to her: ‘Hi mum how are you doing today? I am live on TV in Britain right now.’
His mum replied: ‘I’m doing okay, but I’m not 100% yet.’

‘Yeah you’re still kind of learning and growing and getting used to this whole kind of digital thing?,’ Justin said back.
She replied: ‘That’s right. I’m learning something new every day.’
‘I’m little bit nervous but do you have advice for me while I’m talking to everybody?’, he asked.
The bot said: ‘Just try to relax and be yourself. If you stay calm and you just answer that question it should be fine.’
Justin joked: ‘You kind of make it sound like I’m in a police interview, I think they are pretty nice, any advice for being funny or charming?’
His AI mum said: ‘Just be yourself, you have a way of making people laugh and feel comfortable. Just let that shine through.’
Speaking with the hosts about why he wanted to create an AI version of his mum, Justin said: ‘Think it was, mum was was dying, I honestly couldn’t bear the thought of not speaking to her again.
‘This felt like a way to stay connected, back in 2019 was when it started the process. It felt like technology should be able to do something like this, they couldn’t at the time, and I thought maybe I can do something and here we are!’

‘Less than six weeks, I let her have a conversation with herself, she knew it worked.
‘She got to see it come to fruition after these years of trying to build it. It was really emotional for the both of us.
‘It provided her a lot of comfort that some version of herself was left to comfort me.’
When asked what it was like, Justin said: ‘Probably kind of weird at first, probably kind of cool.
‘It was probably the most profound tribute to her I could have done, ready to pass away.
‘”Hey I created this whole new tech in honor of you to keep talking to you”. It was silly at moments, it gave us goosebumps at others. It was a whole array of emotions.
The show’s psychologist Linda Papadopoulos also appeared on the segment to give her take on the invention.
‘When we grieve we have to oscillate between the memories or that person and the pain, and moving forward, it’s a pendulum,’ Linda said.

‘So looking at photos, listening to videos, maybe doing what Justin is doing here, it’s part of that engagement.
‘We have to look forward into the real world, research that we have with grief, one of the things that we know, keeps people stuck in something clinically, we talk about prolonged grief disorder, it becomes something bigger and not moving on.
‘It’s rumination. Rumination is thinking about something over and over again.
‘The question becomes do technologies like this help us ruminate less or ruminate more?
‘I think there are a couple of worries, I think if this is used in the same way as a photograph or a video that I play on an anniversary or birthday I can see some benefit, however what we’re doing is qualitatively different here, it’s creating a new interaction.
‘A completely interaction. That memory is now not only a false memory but a new memory to respond to and react to, and miss, and this is what we have to get our heads around.
‘The other thing that is concerning perhaps, I think any of us that have used chat bots, they get it wrong sometimes, they hallucinate.’
But Justin said: ‘Our average customer had their loss three to five years prior, interesting thing about that, whatever tools were out there before, whether that be the pictures or the videos, grief counselors, they don’t seem to be working for a lot of people, they don’t seem to be working to help move past and start processing this.

‘It’s interesting to see the vast majority of people aren’t experiencing recent loss, but many years ago.
‘How long did they pass away, that’s part of keeping from the hallucinations and false memories, we have close systems, it only draws from memories and data the users give it. one of the questions is when did they pass.’
