Hong Kong veteran actor ‘Benz Hung’ Hui Shiu-hung dies at age 76

Hong Kong veteran actor “Benz Hung” Hui Shiu-hung has died at the age of 76 from complications arising from cancer. TV host Luisa Maria Leitao, a close friend of the actor, revealed on Tuesday that Hui had died at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital at 2.30am due to “multiple organ failure caused by cancer”. “Hui was surrounded by his many family and friends. His family expressed gratitude to his friends – both those who visited him in hospital and those who called from abroad to check on him,” she said in a statement. “His family will handle the funeral arrangements and will make a public announcement later.” Actor Chow Yun-fat, comedian Dayo Wong Tze-wah and Hui’s colleagues from TVB were among those who visited Hui and his family at the hospital on Monday and Tuesday. Hui had appeared in numerous TV dramas and films in Hong Kong since the 1970s. He earned the nickname Benz Hung for previously driving a Mercedes-Benz car to work. One of his well-known roles was as a superintendent known as “Chung Sir” in the movie Love Undercover in 2002, with the character going undercover as the father of the heroine, a police officer surnamed Fong. In one scene, while going undercover to meet a triad gang boss, he answers the phone as “Chung Sir” rather than as “Fong Sir” and quickly responds to suspicions by claiming his full name is “Fong Chung Sir”. Hui was also active on social media before being admitted to the hospital, featuring in an online show named My Father is Seeking Joy with his daughter, Charmaine Hui. The programme showcases the pair spending time together and doing activities such as cooking and playing video games. Hui, whose wife is from Singapore, at one point moved to Yishun with his spouse a few years ago, telling a TV programme that he had hoped to develop a small business in the city state.
